look what the typhoons blew in...

as the wind and rain of back-to-back typhoons pedring and quiel blow and pour, there is an uneasy truce in the backyard.

the migrant brown shrike has arrived in the garden, much to the dismay of the current ruling species, the pied fantail (well, at least i imagine the pied fantail must feel something akin to dismay).  yesterday, i saw a pair of fantails still whizzing  across the garden to catch insects from their favorite pot perches, while the brown shrike picked at something it had caught and impaled on the kafir lime bush. a noisy skirmish would transpire when they would meet up at the gumamela bush and the swing base, ending with both parties retreating to their secured territory.  the bulbuls must be amused at this tug-of-war for dominance over the backyard.

unfortunately, if all goes the way of previous years, the resident fantails will be relegated to the next door empty lot and the high canopy of the mango tree while the brown shrike will rule over the yard for the rest of the season until summer.

the pied fantail's days of lording of the backyard will soon be over... until summer that is

the brown shrike, the new boss of the backyard, back with his old murderous ways

hardly a week since it arrived, adri and i already caught the shrike with a victim. another poor tree frog slaughtered into choice meat sections strung up on the thorns of the kafir lime.  once again the small head was pierced thru its eye socket, and limbs suspended at the joints. flies and the stench of death surround the crime scene.

flies hovering over a poor decapitated tree frog's head, pierced thru its eye socket

spindly legs, still with a lot of muscle, blood vessels and skin...

(try to ignore the panting dog in the background... it's just maggie)

small animals of the backyard beware.  the butcher is back.

ITCZ + Falcon = backyard birding

with the rains continuously pouring and typhoon falcon very slowly moving out of the philippines, my full saturday schedule suddenly freed itself up.  plans for birding at balara c/o karen (plans made over a rainy pizza dinner) cancelled,  a lunch date moved to merienda (IF the rains let up) and a late afternoon/early dinner meeting postponed to sunday.

what to do, what to do?

adri & i ended up backyard birding!

we started birding in the dry confines of the house, looking out from the screened dining room window at a pied fantail, a couple of eurasian tree sparrows and a yellow-vented bulbul picking at an indian mango (fallen from the tree, peeled &  stripped to the seed by our rescued black lab pearl) and the insects hovering around it.

the rain seemed to have been reduced to intermittent showers (interspersed with heavy rain!) and the garden seemed inviting to several birds who probably welcomed the chance to look for food.  so we decided to bird from the terrace, our toes warmed by sleeping dogs curled up on top of our feet.

the pied fantails (at least 2 of them taking turns) have taken center stage in the garden, literally.  the current favorite perch now is the stick used to prop up the clothesline... a good vantage point to survey the garden at grass level. they didn't mind the showers and the beads of rain rolled easily off their tails and back.  they only retreated when the rain began to fall in heavy, noisy drops hitting the roof.

almost all the regulars were there. the sunbirds called loudly as the checked out the heliconias and the ornamental bananas.  the male even took sips of water from the drops which formed on the hairy kamias leaves.

a zebra dove landed behind the bushes against the garden wall... walking the periphery of the garden and disappearing behind the foliage only to re-appear and fly off from the behind the plants on the opposite end of the garden. we called it the zebra dove-rail.

colasisis zipped by noisily, woodpeckers and gerygones called out loudly but were no-shows (we didn't even attempt to move from our dry terrace seats & dog warmers for better views).

a pair of yellow-vented bulbuls (probably the same pair who enjoy dips in the bird baths on hot days) now huddled together for warmth as they attempted to fluff out and dry their feathers (in vain).

the eurasian tree sparrows were drenched by the rain, but bravely searched through the grass for food... probably very hungry after 2 days of rain!

pretty soon though, the birders themselves had to go searching for our own food!  we left our garden view feeling good that we were still able to go birding (and in adri's case bird photographing!) in rainy weather, without having to leave the house!

(thanks to adri for all the beautiful bird photos, except the first 2 which i took thru the screen window with my point-&-shoot! click on the photos for larger views)

the flood...

i would've never thought it to happen to us
.
one minute i was playing with the dogs, trying to clean pearl's ears (oh wait, who's pearl? that's another storm altogether). from the terrace i watched the water rise, until we all started getting panicky.

rugs started to be rolled. then it was already to late to bring out the cars to higher ground.  we started grabbing everything in sight and carrying it to the second floor.
the last picture i took before utter panic was this:

the water about to breach the windows.  (when we inspected the damage later, the water line reached up to about 3 inches above the horizontal grill).  we gave up when we began to see snakes (tiny ones) swimming everywhere (yes, even inside the house).

absolutely helpless, we all retreated to the second floor (6 people and 3 dogs and 1 cockatiel). and the water continued to rise and rise and rise.

i tried not to think of my beloved car which had never, ever failed me, being swallowed by the dirty flood water. of my dad's car and my sister's car in the same garage.  of the cockatiels, budgies and the lone lovebird who were probably in panic over the rising water. of the books and photos from fiji and concep that i was not able to save. of all the furniture floating around. (yes, it was amazing, everything floated: the dining table, the antique four poster bed, the upholstered sofas, the carved chests, chairs, shelves, kitchen tables, even the chest freezer).

from my bedroom window, i watched people swimming in the street (video later), a brown shrike relentlessly fishing out drowning insects from the water, and my niece's plastic slide and swing set floating in circles in our front yard.

and just before the flood waters could breach our 6 foot fence. it stopped raining. and the flood waters started to recede.  in an hour we could survey the damage. it was heartbreaking.

but then the people on the street shouted that there was a dead body in the creek.  and i saw that our next door neighbors lived in bungalows. and i heard the devastation all over metro manila on the news.

it will be a MAJOR overhaul, cleaning and tons of things to throw out.  but for me and my family, tomorrow the sun will shine, and everything will dry out. i still have a lot to be thankful for.

i read in the papers that yesterday typhoon ondoy dumped 341 milliliters of rain on metro manila in 6 hours. the averag rainfall for metro manila for september is 391.7 millilters. ano ba namang laban natin dun?

after frank

i came home early from school yesterday (hmmm... i shouldn't even have been in school really) and adri and i decided to take issa and sam for a short walk to the playground.
by then, most of the streets had been cleaned of fallen plants and branches, so there was barely a trace of frank's aftermath in our little subdivision.  the height of the creek's water the day before was marked by plastic bags caught on plants growing on the stone wall.
there wasn't anyone at the playground, and just a few boys (and men) playing halfcourt basketball.  sam and issa played at the swings, slide, monkey bars and seesaw (bakit walang playground nung bata ako?) for a bit and then we took the long way home.
barely a trace of frank's aftermath, no one at the playground, no classes...

we hardly ran into anyone on the street, no kids on bikes, no kalye badminton, no bouncing balls, no running kids in rubber slippers, no one. just a maid walking a dog, people cleaning the street and watering their plants and a few construction workers on their way home. all adults. wow, where were all the kids?  at the risk of sounding old, i HAVE to say... dati basta walang klase nasa kalye na kami! patintero, bikes, or just roaming the streets. i suppose now the kids were inside playing some game, or surfing the net or watching tv or a (pirated) dvd; discovering the world from inside their rooms.

ay, iba na talaga. i suppose my nieces and nephews wouldn't know patintero from shato, or piko from agawan base. back then, indoor games meant scrabble or monopoly or pusoy or clue  (which reminds me, adri was able to install clue on my computer.. so now you can play a game originally meant to be played by three or more people by yourself!).

oh well. the world turns. life goes on. ladida.
